Basement Finishing in Madison, NJ 07940: CraftPro installed XPS Insulation, Drywall, Molding & Trim including Custom Window Sills and more before Priming & Painting this Now Finished Walk-Out Basement
Finishing this Basement in Madison, NJ
This Madison, NJ home’s 1,900 square foot basement was unfinished and almost completely unused. Turning it into livable space made more room for this growing family and increased their home’s property value. The homeowner did most of the framing himself and hired CraftPro Contracting to execute the rest of the framing and complete this remodel to turn the basement into usable, finished, living space. We completed the framing and insulated all the walls, we installed drywall, base-molding and large custom window sills and finally we primed and painted the entire basement.

Before the Remodel: an Unfinished Madison, NJ Basement
Insulating the Basement with Owens Corning brand ‘Foamular’ XPS Rigid Panels Reinforced with GreatStuff brand Spray Foam Insulation
This walk-out basement lead to the garage and, being unfinished, was very cold in the wintertime. The walls needed to be insulated – especially the exterior masonry walls. CraftPro insulated all the basement walls (interior and exterior) with 2-inch deep Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) rigid foam panels – “Foamular 250” by Owens Corning. At R-5 per inch, that’s an R-10 insulation value. Rigid foam XPS insulation products are a perfect choice for basement finishing remodels, for a number of reasons:
“Owens Corning’s Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Rigid Foam Insulation is made with Owens Corning’s patented Hydrovac® process technology under strict quality control measures, which makes it highly resistant to moisture and permits the product to retain its high R-value year after year even after exposure to moisture and freeze/thaw cycling … Extruded polystyrene insulation is ideal for below grade applications … is resistant to degradation from material common to most soils and will retain its insulating performance characteristics … is an ENERGY STAR® qualified product. Green Approved by the National Association of Home Builders.” – Owens Corning Foamular ® XPS Insulation
We could immediately feel the difference during this winter basement finishing project. XPS insulation is an expensive product but is relatively simple to install (click here for our DIY how-to). Appropriate sized pieces were measured, scored and snapped and then installed between the basement’s framing.
The Insulation Installation Process
The insulating process of this basement included reinforcement with “GreatStuff” brand spray foam between the gaps in the Foamular panels and the framing. The tongue-and-groove XPS panels were sealed at their seams with Tyvek insulation tape which, along with the spray-foam, created an almost airtight insulation seal: the temperature difference was felt immediately! The basement grew very warm when the heat was turned on. We did not insulate the ceiling because this lets the home “breathe”: the warm air rises to the upper floors, thereby saving the homeowners money on their utility bills.
Basement Finishing Carpentry: Drywall, Molding, Custom Window Sills, etc.
Below are photos of the molding & trim we installed and the drywall we hung (remember to click any photo on this page for a slideshow). We used mold- and mildew-resistant Sheetrock, also called “GreenRock”, throughout the basement walls, ceilings and soffits. The drywall was then taped and finished: “floated” to a smooth finish. We also custom-built window sills for the egress windows. The sills are deep enough for decor such as framed pictures or for shelf space.
Basement Drywall Primed with Zinsser
Below are pictures of the first coat of primer we applied. The first coat (pictured) seals the new drywall and the second coat of primer coats the surface and helps paint coverage & adhesion. Properly sealed and primed drywall is essential to get the surface ready for painting. The photos show how the first coat is absorbed into the very porous drywall and joint compound (a/k/a spackle, mud).
